About this calculator

Body type labels — ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph — describe general frame and how your body tends to store muscle and fat. They come from William Sheldon's somatotype work and still show up in fitness planning because training and nutrition responses differ by frame.

This calculator uses a simple wrist-and-height heuristic. Measure wrist circumference at the narrowest point (between hand and forearm bones). Divide height in cm by wrist in cm. A higher ratio means a smaller wrist relative to height, which maps to ectomorph. A lower ratio suggests endomorph.

Ectomorphs often need more calories and progressive overload to gain muscle. Endomorphs often respond well to higher protein, steady activity, and consistent calorie control. Mesomorphs sit in the middle and usually adapt quickly to both strength and cardio.

This is not a medical test. Body fat percentage and muscle mass matter more than frame size alone. Use the [[bmi]] calculator for weight-for-height, [[body-fat]] for composition, and [[tdee]] or [[calorie]] for daily energy needs. The [[macro]] calculator helps turn those calories into protein, carb, and fat targets.

Common uses

  • Guessing whether a hard-gainer profile fits ectomorph training advice
  • Choosing a starting macro split before a fat-loss phase
  • Understanding why two people at the same weight look different
  • Picking realistic bulk vs cut timelines based on frame
  • Fitness coaching intake when scale weight alone is misleading

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure wrist circumference correctly?

Use a flexible tape on the narrowest part of the wrist, just above the wrist bone. Keep the tape snug but not tight. Measure the dominant hand standing relaxed. Repeat twice and average.

Can my body type change over time?

Your bone frame does not change after adulthood, but muscle and fat distribution can shift a lot with training and diet. Labels describe tendency, not destiny.

I am ectomorph but overweight — is that possible?

Yes. Frame size and body fat are separate. An ectomorph can still gain fat in a long calorie surplus. Use BMI and body fat for health context, not frame type alone.

Is mesomorph the best body type?

No type is best. Mesomorphs often build muscle faster, but each type has trade-offs. Consistent training and nutrition beat genetics for most goals.

How does this differ from BMI?

BMI uses only weight and height. Body type uses wrist size to estimate frame. A muscular mesomorph can have high BMI while being lean. Use both for different questions.
